Sealing stainless steel pipe threads can be a daunting task due to the risk of galling, a common issue where the threads seize or bind together. This guide will provide a comprehensive solution to ensure a leak-proof and effective seal for stainless steel pipes.
Galling is caused by cold welding of the high points on the metal surface when threads are tightened. This issue is particularly prevalent with stainless steel due to its hardness and oxide film disruption during threading. To avoid the seizing of threads, proper sealing techniques are crucial.

· Employ Gray Stainless Steel PTFE Thread Seal Tape, which contains a nickel pigment suitable for stainless steel. This tape prevents galling and ensures a secure seal.
· Instructions for Use:
Start with a ½" wide tape, applying it on the first thread without extending past the end.
Wrap in the opposite direction of the threading motion, maintaining tension to allow the tape to mold into the threads.
For effectiveness, three revolutions of 3.5 or 4.0 mil tape are recommended. Thinner tapes may require more wraps.

· This non-seizing compound enhances the sealing of all metal and plastic, including challenging stainless steel threads.
· Instructions for Use:
Clean threads of any dirt, oil, or debris.
Stir the compound well and apply liberally to male threads.
Proceed with joint assembly in a normal fashion.
For the most reliable seal, use both PTFE tape and Gray Magic Thread Compound together. This dual approach is especially necessary for larger diameter pipes (4" and up) to prevent leaks comprehensively.
